Kochi Metro | Cabinet gives nod for second-phase extension
Kochi: The second-phase extension for metro rail received Kerala government’s approval for the state’s lone metro system. Pinarayi Vijayan who chaired the cabinet gave his approval for the extension. This leg of Kochi Metro will take the elevated train network to the city’s IT hub located at Kakkanad.
This will be 11.2 km-long extension starting from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad that will be covering 11 stations. The estimated cost for said project is around Rs 2310 crore. The Kochi Metro stations on this route are - Kochi CEZ, Chembumukku, Palarivattam Junction, Palarivattam Bypass, Infopark-1Vazhakkala, Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad, Chittethukara and KINFRA.
Presently the Kochi Metro Rail network is plying from Aluva which is a suburb of Kochi, connecting the city centre near Maharaja’s College covering over 18 km. There are a total of 16 stations at this route. On the other hand the first-phase extension commencing at Maharaja’s College to Pettah, taking the train network throughout the busy intersection of Vyttila. This stretch is expected to be wrapped in few years time.
A large number of IT and software professionals will be able to commute easily to the city with the Kakkanad extension. It will ease their travel problems as they will not have to wade through traffic. Additionally it is expected that by next year ‘Water Metro Project’ – modern day air-conditioned ferries will be open for public too. For this project city’s in-land water network will be used to start the service. With Water Metro becoming operational, commuters will be able to move from one part of the city to another effortlessly.
In February 2015, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) had received the Technical Feasibility Report and DPR from Engineering consultancy firm RITES. The study was for the second phase extension for Infopark.
Later on DPR was revised based on the new metro policy and it was then submitted to state government in February this year. Work on the second phase will begin after the proposal received approval from the central government.
