Hyperloop | Mumbai to build vacuum tube infrastructure from December

Image
Mumbai:  Settle into a pod in a vacuum tube, fasten your seat belt and whizz across to Pune from Mumbai in 20 minutes. Devendra Fadnavis , Maharashtra’s chief minister, believes the regular inter-city traveler will be able to do and afford this by 2024. By the end of 2018, construction is set to begin on a 15-km test track for the Mumbai-Pune hyperloop. For the uninitiated, the Hyperloop is a still-untested high-speed mass transportation concept floated by American entrepreneur and innovator Elon Musk. It involves building a near-perfect vacuum tunnel or tube, a railway track and a vehicle that floats above the track using magnetic levitation. Cargo and—if all goes well—passengers can then be loaded into this vehicle, which accelerates through electric propulsion and picks up speed due to extremely low friction in a vacuum. This will only be possible if the National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC) - the nodal agency executing the project, concurs to realignment. In case if a compromise is not arrived at, Maharashtra government will have to forcibly acquire land for bullet train project. PAC slammed MMRDA for poor planning and misjudging the feasibility of Mumbai Monorail

Image
Mumbai: The public accounts committee (PAC) of the state legislature has criticized the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for its poor planning and for having misjudged the viability of the monorail and the Skywalks. Calling both facilities a “waste of public money,” the statutory committee said none was useful to citizens. In its report filed in the state legislature on Thursday, the committee said that although Phase 1 of the Monorail does not serve people traveling on overcrowded local trains, the government has been conducting safety tests for Phase 2. Mumbai Monorail Started in 2014, the first monorail project in India has caused losses. A response to an RTI submitted in September revealed that the monorail loses Rs3 lakh daily. While officials said that Phase 1, between Wadala and Chembur, covers a number of passengers of 18,000 passengers per day, many experts have described the project as “a getaway for citizens on weekends.” The MM...
