Kochi Metro | Commuters might make airline check-in via metro train

Kochi: Good news seems to be underway for passengers who are flying out of Kochi International airport via Kochi Metro stations. There are plans to offer check-in facility via Kochi Metro. This possibility is being explored by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) as well as state government, CIAL and several stakeholders. The officials are looking at offering facility of airline check-in as and baggage drop points at specific metro stations for those passengers who need to fly out via Kochi International airport.

KR Jyothilal, Transport secretary had recently shared that check-in facilities might be initiated from JLN Station. This project will be part of the efforts to combine Kochi Metro with the airport. Jyothilal also stated that they are working on the feasibility of the project as they need to set up system of transporting luggage from Kochi Metro to Cial. They will also have to meet various airline companies to ascertain their willingness to associate with the initiative.

If the plan works out air passengers will simply have to check-in with their baggage, collect boarding pass and hop on to a Kochi Metro train taking them Aluva. Once they reach there, passenger can avail feeder service like the electric bus that will take them to Aluva Metro station and Cial.

Airport officials on their part have shown interest in the project and they will consider it in positive light. VJ Kurian, managing director at CIAL stated that once state government sends its proposal they will consider it. They have yet not received any proposal but are waiting to hear from state government’s officials. Kurian said that once they go through the proposal they will give their point of view.

APM Mohammed Hanish, KMRL managing director has expressed his enthusiasm on starting such an initiative via Kochi Metro station. He added that there are lot of considerations to be made before kicking off the plan. These include consensus of international airports, airline companies as well other external stakeholders. Every party involved will be consulted before taking a call on starting this facility.

Many airline professionals have welcomed this idea as this will offer a seamless connectivity to air passengers. Responsibilities have to be divided among Kochi Metro and Airport in terms security and baggage transport.

Kochi Metro will not be the only station to start such a service, Delhi Metro already provides this counter at many of its metro stations plying on Airport express line.
