Lucknow: The state cabinet approved detailed project reports (DPR) of the Metro rail route in Agra, Kanpur and Meerut on Wednesday. He also appointed Lucknow Corporation Metro Rail (LMRC) as the interim consultant to execute the preliminary construction work of the priority section, deposit, retaining walls, etc. of these projects and issue related tenders in anticipation of approval of the Center.

The Kanpur and Agra Metro projects will have two corridors each, while Meerut will have a corridor. All of these corridors should be completed by 2024.

The estimated cost of completion of the Agra Metro, Kanpur and Meerut projects, as approved by the state government, is Rs 13,936 crore, Rs 18,342 crore and Rs 14,890 crore respectively.

With the approval of the government, the construction will begin in Sikandara to the Taj East Gate corridor in Agra; IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel in Kanpur, and between Shraddhapuri Phase-2 and Jagriti Vihar Extension in Meerut.

The DPR of Kanpur was sent for approval last year, but was returned to comply with the New Metro Policy 2017, while the DPR of Agra and Meerut were sent for approval for the first time.

All reports have been made in accordance with the guidelines of the Metro Policy, which emphasizes the construction of Metro with a 50:50 capital partnership between the Center and the state government. The cabinet also made a nod to the comprehensive mobility plan and alternative analysis report of each of these cities.
