Chennai Metro | CMRL finishes tunnelling work in North Chennai

Chennai: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Tuesday finished its tunnelling work to connect North Chennai with the rest of the city through metro train services.


Engineers of Afcons Infrastructure achieved breakthrough by completing boring work for the second of the two tunnels. A tunnel boring machine drilled through the fibre reinforced concrete wall and entered Korukkupet underground metro station.

The 9km phase-1 extension project from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar, estimated to cost Rs 3,770 crore, is expected to be ready by 2019.


A CMRL official said the tunnel was completed three months ahead of the deadline. The tunnels built in North Chennai will connect a two kilometer stretch with three underground stations- Washermenpet, Theagaraya College and Korukkupet.


From Korukkupet, a ramp will be built to connect the rest of the line up to Wimco Nagar which will be an elevated corridor.


Construction for the underground line was launched in July 2016 and the first of the two tunnels was completed in September 2017. “This is our 19th tunnel breakthrough for Chennai Metro,” said an Afcons engineer.


While tunnelling work is complete, other civil work in the tunnels and stations will continue.

Delhi Metro | CMRS to start inspection of Durgabai Deshmukh-Lajpat Nagar section

New Delhi: The Pink Line is the second new line of Phase III of Delhi Metro which was partially opened on 14 March 2018. There will be an inspection of Delhi Metro"s Pink line, from Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus to Lajpat Nagar stations. The inspection will be done by the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on July 23. The inspection will concentrate on the way for the opening of the section, which is likely to be inaugurated early next month, the official said. This stretch will have two interchange points INA and Lajpat Nagar. There are six new stations on this 8.10 Km stretch which are are Sir Vishveshariah Moti Bagh, Bhikhaji Cama Place, Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar.
