Chennai Metro | Beneath Anna Salai, Metro Rail work to come to life again

Chennai Metro(Summary): After a long hiatus, tunnelling and station work on the Chennai Metro Rail sites on Anna Salai will begin soon.

Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) said they plan to award the contract to L&T for constructing stations on the stretch from Government Estate to AG-DMS. “We will sign the contract in about a week. A few weeks afterwards, they will start work on the sites,” an official said.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., which was given the contract for tunnelling, will start work sometime this week along this stretch. Though Afcons’s contract worth about Rs. 350 crore was awarded last month, the contract for station work alone remained pending. Sources said there had been a delay in awarding the contract owing to issues related to cost.

Last year, the Chennai Metro Rail work along Anna Salai came to halt as the contractors failed to complete the job.

Hence, fresh tenders were floated twice to call for contractors to complete the remaining work.

Sources said that there were no other bidders except L&T and Afcons Infrastructure Limited. The work was divided into two parts — completing tunnelling and station construction from Government Estate to AG-DMS and AG-DMS to Saidapet, respectively.
